The air-cooled chiller is an industrial cooling equipment equipped with a compression refrigeration circuit, using air as the cooling medium for the condenser and water as the refrigerant carrier. It mainly consists of four main components: compressor, condenser, evaporator, and throttling device (expansion valve). With its advantages of easy installation and no need for cooling water systems, it is widely used in industrial temperature control and air conditioning equipment, plastic, electronic manufacturing, electroplating, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, ultrasonic cooling, printing and other industrial production. It can accurately control the temperature required for modern industrial mechanization production, thereby greatly improving production efficiency and product quality.

The refrigeration system of a chiller unit consists of four basic parts: compressor, condenser, throttle, and evaporator. Connect the four major components in a certain order using copper pipes to form a closed system, which is filled with a certain amount of refrigerant.
The compressor sucks in low-temperature and low-pressure Freon gas from the evaporator, compresses it into high-temperature and high-pressure Freon gas, and then flows through a thermal expansion valve (capillary tube), throttling it into a low-temperature and low-pressure Freon liquid two-phase object. Then, the low-temperature and low-pressure Freon liquid absorbs heat from indoor air in the evaporator, and the cycle of compression condensation throttling evaporation is repeated.

Working Principle

During the operation of an air-cooled chiller unit, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the cooled object (such as cooling water) in the evaporator and vaporizes. The compressor continuously extracts the generated gas from the evaporator and compresses it into high-temperature, high-pressure steam. The refrigerant vapor is sent to the condenser and exchanges heat with the air. After releasing heat, it condenses into liquid and enters the evaporator after being depressurized by the throttling mechanism, where it vaporizes again and absorbs heat from the cooled object. This cycle repeats itself.

Compared to water-cooled chillers, air-cooled chillers use finned condensers, which directly use fans to force air flow to remove refrigerant heat without the need for other auxiliary equipment, eliminating the need for cooling towers, cooling water pumps, and cooling pipeline systems. It has certain advantages in installation, especially for small chillers with low cooling capacity requirements, which have great advantages in being easy to move.
Due to different heat transfer temperature differences, under the same outdoor environmental conditions, the condensation temperature of air-cooled chillers is higher than that of water-cooled chillers. Therefore, under the same cooling capacity, the power consumption of air-cooled chillers will be higher. In terms of energy efficiency, water-cooled units typically have a cooling capacity 300-500 Kcal/h higher than air-cooled units.
The air-cooled chiller unit avoids the problems of condenser scaling and water pipe blockage caused by poor water quality in areas, and saves water resources. However, the heat transfer efficiency of the finned condenser it uses is greatly affected by the accumulation of ash and scale. A dust filter mesh must be installed in front of the heat dissipation finned tubes, and regular cleaning is required.
